Bhubaneswar: A brain dead youth, Sushil Sahoo from Aladi village under Belaguntha block in Odisha’s Ganjam district could give a fresh lease of life to at least five persons.
Sushil’s family donated his heart, liver, two kidneys, and corneas for transplanting on needy patients.
Sushil had gone to Surat in Gujarat to earn a livelihood. He was working there in a private company as a worker.
Five days back, while at work Sushil suddenly fell ill due to hypertension and was rushed to nearby Prabhu General Hospital by his co-workers.
However, doctors at the hospital said that he was brain dead. He was kept under observation for 36 hours but there was no improvement in his condition.
On the advice of the attending doctors, Sushil’s family members decided to donate his organs.
On the recommendation of the doctors, Sushil’s heart was transplanted in a patient at Chennai’s MGM Hospital.
Similarly, his liver and two kidneys were transplanted in two patients at a hospital in Ahmedabad and his two corneas were also donated.
Sushil’s body was received by family members on arrival at the airport here today.
“My brother is dead, he won’t return but if his organs can save lives there can be nothing greater than that. So we decided and donated his organs,” said Anil Sahoo in a voice choked with emotion.
Earlier too, another youth from Ganjam Suraj Behera was in the news after his family members had donated his organs following his death in Surat.
