Bhubaneswar: In a swift and well-coordinated operation on the intervening night of October 16 and 17, the Brajrajnagar Police eight eight persons, described as habitual offenders, and foiled their alleged plan to commit a major dacoity. The operation led to the seizure of a significant cache of weapons and a vehicle.
According to an official press note, Sub-Inspector M.M. Naik and his team, while on night patrol, received a credible tip-off about a group of armed criminals assembling near the Tileimal jungle. The police immediately launched a raid on the location.
Upon seeing the police team, the suspects reportedly fled the scene in a Scorpio vehicle. Acting quickly, the police organized strategic checkpoints (nakas) across the area. This prompt action led to the apprehension of seven of the accused. One suspect, who initially managed to escape, was later rounded up.
A subsequent search of the accused and their vehicle yielded a significant haul of illegal arms and weapons. The seized items include two country-made pistols, three live rounds of ammunition, two ‘Bhujalis’, one iron rod, two knives, and the Scorpio vehicle used by the gang.
All eight accused individuals are residents of the Brajrajnagar area. They have been identified as: Prakash Yadav @ Kallu (24),
Sandeep Das @ Chhotka (27), Bishal Kumbhar (24), Saurav Singh (23), Rahul Chowhan (27), Jagadish Bhiana (32), Biswa Majhi (33), and Kuldeep Singh (34).
A case has been registered at Brajrajnagar Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 310(4) and 310(5) pertaining to preparation and assembly for dacoity, and the Arms Act. Investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Police sources revealed that a majority of the accused have extensive criminal histories. The records of individuals like Biswa Majhi, Prakash Yadav, and Sandeep Das show multiple prior cases, including charges of attempt to murder, assault, criminal intimidation, and other serious offences under both the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the BNS.
