Balasore: No one would have ever imagined that Srikant Patra would have to pay the deficit Re 1 on cigarettes with his life.

The shocking incident occurred in Kasaphal village under Singla police limits of Balasore district. As per reports, four miscreants asked Srikant for cigarettes at his shop at Rajdhani Chaka. While the price per cigarette was Rs 6, the group was not willing to pay more than Rs 5.

As the argument intensified, Srikant asked his elder brother Subash to reach the shop. The allegedly intoxicated group attacked the duo with sharp weapons and left them bloodied. While the miscreants were trying to flee, locals caught hold of two and handed them over to police. The other two are still absconding.

Meanwhile, the injured brothers were taken to Balasore hospital in a critical condition. As his condition worsened Subash had to be shifted to SCB Medical and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

While an investigation was initiated, locals blamed rampant country and foreign liquor stores in the area. They have demanded a compensation of Rs 15 lakh for Subash’s family and protested for immediate closure on any liquor shops in the area.

Basta SDPO and investigating officers of Singla police station were present at the spot.
