Puri: Excise Department officials on Thursday seized 85 grams of brown sugar during a raid conducted under the Gopa police station limits in Puri district and arrested one person in this connection.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Konark Excise Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manoj Kumar Pruseth conducted the raid near Nayahat College Chhak, where the accused was allegedly waiting to sell the contraband.
The operation was carried out under the directives of Puri District Excise Superintendent Jagdish Chandra Samal and under the direct supervision of Nimapada Excise Inspector Pravakar Sethi.
The accused has been identified as Bapuni Mohanty (23). Police sources said Mohanty was caught red-handed while attempting to sell the brown sugar to potential buyers.
The seized contraband has been sent for chemical examination, and a case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the narcotics and identify others involved in the racket.
