Balasore: Jaleswar police on Friday seized 275 gm of brown sugar worth about Rs 27,50,000 and arrested one person in this connection.
Police have also seized Rs 1,23,600 in cash, a motorcycle, a mobile phone, an Aadhar Card, a bank passbook, a cheque book and an ATM card from the possession of the accused.
The accused, a 36-year-old man from Patharpura village under Jaleswar police limits is a habitual offender with several cases registered against his name.
According to the police, acting on credible information, a team of Jaleswar police went for roadblocking near Ankul Chandra Temple at Krushna Nagar on Jaleswar-Laxmannath road and was able to apprehend the accused who was transporting brown sugar from West Bengal Side to Jaleswar on his motorcycle.
Police have claimed to have seized 275 gm of brown sugar worth about Rs 27,50,000, Rs 1,23,600 cash from his exclusive and conscious possession along with other articles.
Police have said that following the incident it conducted a house search of the accused and seized certain other documents.
Further investigation in the matter is under progress, police added.
Worth mentioning, in the war against drugs Balasore police has successfully apprehended 22 accused persons in the last 6 months in 9 different cases in Jaleswar and Sahdevkhunta police limits.
Out of these 9 cases, 5 cases are the ones in which the accused have been apprehended with commercial quantity of brown sugar seized from their conscious and exclusive possession with an intent to sell.
A total of 1.121 kg of brown sugar has been seized by Jaleswar Police and 10.5 kg of brown sugar has been seized by Sahdevkhunta Police.
The approximate market value of the seized drugs would amount to Rs 11.5 crores.
A financial investigation has been initiated in 5 of the major cases in which kingpins of the local supply chain have been apprehended.
Notably, an anti-narcotics task force was constituted under the leadership of Sagarika Nath, SP Balasore with 3 DSP rank officers, Sasanka Shekhar Beura, Gayatri Pradhan and Dilip Sahoo leading 3 small dedicated units to track, isolate and strike on large suppliers of drugs into Balasore district.
