Cuttack: The SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, which successfully performed the first-ever liver transplant recently, has aimed at performing the second such complex surgery soon.
The premier health institute of the State, which conducted the liver transplantation on Manas Barik of Tigiria in Cuttack last month, today discharged him after he recovered satisfactorily.
The critical operation was performed in the premier health institute on April 3 with the joint support of Hyderabad-based Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and experts from SCB.
After the success of the first surgery, the authorities of the top health centre have planned to conduct the second transplant. SCB authorities said that the liver transplant operation will continue on a regular basis in the coming days. So, the poor patients can get the service for free of cost.
“We are planning for a second transplant soon. We have also plans for a cadaveric transplant. The service will be available on a regular basis. The people of Odisha will get this service regularly. I would like to thank the AIG team and SCB staff for their cooperation,” SCB superintendent Dr Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra said.
Odisha-born doctor Santosh Kumar Sahoo who is the vice president of AIG, Hyderabad expressed satisfaction over the success.
“I have a special emotion for SCB as my father was working here for 30 years. I was also born here and studied at SCB Medical Public School. When I came to know that SCB authorities took an interest for liver transplant surgery, I along with our AIG management stepped forward in this regard. With the support of the SCB authorities, we conducted the surgery successfully. Being an Odia, I feel proud today. I want this service to continue in SCB,” said Dr Santosh Kumar Sahoo.
In order to perform the surgery, the SCB management had signed an agreement with the AIG, Hyderabad following which a 9-member team of surgeons from AIG extended cooperation in performing the major surgery.
While being discharged from the hospital, a jubilant Manas got emotional and extended his deep gratitude to the entire team of doctors and nurses.
“I must thank to the SCB superintendent, HOD and other doctors and nurses who toiled hard to give me a new lease of life. This complex surgery requires around Rs 40 lakh. I am unable to afford Rs 400. The impossible thing became possible only because of the SCB doctors. I am grateful to the entire team,” Manas said with soaked eyes.
