Baripada: The carcass of a female elephant was recovered near Golamundakata village under the Bangriposi forest range in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Sunday. The elephant was 5 years old, Forest Department officials said.
While the reason behind the death of the pachyderm is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that toxic food or electrocution may be responsible for the death.
According to reports, the locals informed the Range officials after they spotted a young elephant approximately lying on the ground in an unconscious situation in the village.
On being informed, officers from the Forest Department, including the Ranger and Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), reached the scene to assess the situation.
Taking stock of the matter, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Baripada, said that veterinarians are conducting the postmortem of the jumbo and the report would reveal cause of the death.
