Bhubaneswar: A inter-ministerial team led by Praveen Vashista, Joint Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) today visited flood-affected areas of Bhadrak District for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused by the recent flood.
The Central team upon its arrival at Bhadrak first toured the flood-affected areas in Dhamnagar block and spoke to the affected people. Bhadrak Collector Gyana Das accompanied the team during the visit.
The team visited Kothara, Bayangdihi, Lenjara etc under Dhamnagar block. After making a damage assessment of farmlands, roads and houses in these areas the team returned to Bhadrak and held a review meeting at the conference hall of the Collector’s office. The review meeting chaired by the Collector was attended by the Central team led by Vashista and other senior officials of the district administration.
Low pressure induced rains and the flood in river Baitarini have caused extensive damage in four blocks of Bhadrak district.
Thousands of hectares of farmland were inundated in Bhandaripokhari, Dhamnagar, Tihidi and Chandabali blocks situated on the banks of river Baitarini destroying paddy and vegetable crops. Sandcasting has been reported in hectares of farmland following the flood. With crops ruined, farmers are left devastated.
Similarly, thatched houses belonging to several people residing in villages along the river bank have collapsed. Several who have lost their houses to the flood have taken shelter under polythene sheets provided by the district administration.
The Central team is on a two-day visit to the State. The team apart from visiting Bhadrak district will be visiting Jajpur, Kendrapara and Puri, the other worst-affected districts.
