Bhubaneswar: The Union Government has extended the tenure of Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), by two years. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal for his re-appointment.
According to an official notification from the Department of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the extension will be on a contract basis. Dr. Mohapatra’s original tenure was set to end on August 31, 2024.
Known as the Cyclone Man of India, Dr Mohapatra has played a crucial role in improving weather forecasting and warning systems in the country. His efforts have helped save countless lives and reduce the impact of natural disasters.
Under his leadership, the IMD has made significant strides in providing timely and accurate weather forecasts, enabling effective disaster management and mitigation. The extension of his tenure is expected to further boost the country’s weather forecasting capabilities.
