Bhubaneswar: A day after taking a dig at BJP-ruled Centre alleging that the saffron party is generating funds for the 2019 polls through the hike in petrol and diesel prices, Odisha Finance Minister today dared the Central Government to be answerable to the general public behind its intention of increasing diesel base price more than petrol.

In his media reactions, Odisha Finance Minister Sashi Bhusan Behera said, “Instead of hiking the prices of diesel and petrol proportionately, only diesel price has been increased.”

He elaborated, “Going by its nomenclature, one could know the details. On April 2, 2014, the base price of petrol was Rs 48.79 while diesel was Rs 44.72. Later on in due course of its price hike, petrol’s base price was Rs 43.08 on October 22, 2018 while diesel was Rs 48.21.”

The Odisha Finance Minister questioned, “What for the Central Government is hiking Rs 5 more base price in diesel than petrol?”

He lambasted, “By levying more tax on diesel like this, whole nation has been affected starting from the farmers, common men, transportation and essential commodities.”

On the contrary, Odisha BJP spokesperson Golak Mohapatra countered, “While the Centre and other State Governments slashed rate of tax levied on petrol and diesel, the State Government has not yet made a cut.”

“I’m unable to understand why our State Government is applying various alibis at various points of time. BJD doesn’t want that the people of Odisha should get petrol and diesel at a cheap rate. Our neighbouring State of West Bengal has a low diesel price. Even in Chhattisgarh and Andhra, but not in Odisha. It needs to scrutinized. If Odisha Government slashes the tax from Rs 22.50, the people could heave a sigh of relief. Government of India is worried and also trying how to lessen the prices of petrol and diesel,” he hit back.
