Bhubaneswar: The Centre has announced plans to develop four river cruise circuits in Odisha as part of the Cruise Bharat Mission, aimed at tapping the state’s vast riverine and coastal potential for tourism.
The four circuits include Bhitarkanika, Jobra, Lalitgiri-Udaygiri-Ratnagiri, and Balasore Hidden Beach.
The Cruise Bharat Mission, launched on September 30, 2024, aims to double cruise passenger traffic by 2029, promoting India’s rich maritime and riverine tourism assets. This initiative is part of the government’s effort to boost tourism and connectivity across the country.
The mission’s objectives include increasing cruise passenger traffic, generating employment opportunities, developing world-class cruise terminals and infrastructure, and promoting sustainable tourism practices. The development of these river cruise circuits will not only enhance tourism in Odisha but also contribute to the country’s economic growth.
The Indian government has already taken steps to develop inland waterways in Odisha, declaring six National Waterways for both cargo and passenger movement. These waterways have been found feasible for cargo and passenger movement based on techno-economic feasibility studies and detailed project reports.
The development of these river cruise circuits and inland waterways will unlock Odisha’s tourism potential and provide a boost to the local economy.
