Bhubaneswar: The 500-year-old tradition of people belonging to the Sulia tribe in Khariguda village of Bolangir district in which animals and birds are sacrificed on the second Tuesday of ‘Pousha’ month, continues to date.
Following the rituals and Puja on Monday night, today morning a huge number of animals and birds were sacrificed. The Sulia Jatra was being held amid great fanfare after a two-year hiatus owing to the COVID pandemic.
Hundreds of domestic animals were lined up at Badakhala in Sulia Pitha of Bolangir to be sacrificed as a part of the age-old tradition. The sacrifices were conducted in the presence of district administration and police personnel.
The Supreme Court, it may be noted, had ruled in September last year that the judiciary cannot interfere in the religious practices of the tribals. The tribals believe that it will bring success and prosperity to the community by offering blood to the Sulia god.
Three platoons force of police and a team of the ODRAF have been stationed in the area to check any untoward incident. The tribal people of the region carry on with their 500-year-old tradition which they also believe would save them from the wrath of Nature.
