Cuttack: Choudwar police have busted a chain snatching gang and have arrested three persons which include a middleman and a goldsmith.
Police have seized 22 gold chains weighing 295.380gm, and two Pulsar motorcycles from their possession.
Police have arrested Subrat Bhata (31) and Debasish Swain (25) alias Omm of Barang area and Subham Kokate (23) of Kaligali in Cuttack.
“While investigating a chain snatching case, it was found that a big gang was involved in chain snatching incidents in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. During the course of the investigation, it has been found that they were involved 21 cases of chain snatching,” informed Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh briefing newsmen today.
Singh said that the gang after committing chain snatching used to sell it to a jeweller through a middleman who used to melt it.
The DCP stated that on February 22 while a woman with her son were passing through the Nuapatna Madhusudan bridge two miscreants who came on a Pulsar motorcycle snatched away two gold chains from them and fled towards the Choudwar side.
“We have apprehended three persons in this case. One of them is Subrat Bhata of Barang area who is a veteran chain snatcher. He has an associate Subhranshu alias Jubulu of 42 mouza. Recently, a few days back he has been arrested and forwarded in another case in 42 mouza. Another person Debasish Swain (25) alias Omm of Barang, a middle man who was receiving the gold has been arrested.
One Subham Kokate (23) of Kaligali in Cuttack city, a jeweller has been arrested,” said Singh.
Singh said that they operated as a gang in an expert manner right from snatching gold chains to melting and then its disposal.
“We have seized 22 gold chains weighing 295.380 gm from them,” he added.
