Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, a five-year-old child was burnt alive and two others suffered serious burns at Badapada village under Pattamundai police limits in Kendrapara district on Thursday.

In the fire, two houses and the shamiana put up for the wedding ceremony have been gutted. Fire Service personnel have doused the blaze. Though the exact cause of the fire is not known, it is suspected that it could have been ignited from a lighted cigarette.

The injured identified as Tapan Mallik and Upendra Mallik have been admitted to the Sub Divisional Hospital at Pattamundai.

According to reports, the heart-wrenching incident occurred today afternoon while filling petrol in the motorbike of a member of a barat party.

Today was the wedding day of one Ratnakar Mallik’s son of Badapada village. Ratnakar’s family had procured petrol in a big jar for distribution to members of the barat party to fill in their bikes before the start of the barat procession.

Due to careless handling, a fire broke out while filling petrol in a bike in which a five-year-old son of Ratnakar’s friend was burnt alive.

Ratnakar’s neighbours Tapan Mallik and Upendra Mallik were critically injured in the incident.
