Cuttack: A 30-year-old inmate of Choudwar jail allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Seikh Kalim, a resident of Hati Pokhari area in Cuttack. He was arrested three months ago in connection with a murderous attack.
According to sources, Jail staff found Kalim hanging with a towel during lock-up hours. He was taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead. Kalim was arrested three months ago in connection with a murderous attack case and lodged in Choudwar jail.
Jail DG Anusaya Jena of Cuttack Range, attributed Kalim’s unstable mental condition to the incident.
Jena stated that the under-trial prisoner, who had shown violent behaviour and had psychiatric tendencies, might have taken his own life with a towel due to his mental health issues.
Meanwhile Choudwar police have launched an investigation into the matter.
Notably, this is not the first such incident at Choudwar jail, raising questions about the safety and security measures in place.
