Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government plans to expand the limits of Bhubaneswar city to accommodate its growing population and address issues such as traffic congestion, housing shortages, and public welfare, Housing and Urban Development (H&UD )Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced on Thursday.

Speaking to the media, the Minister stated that Bhubaneswar would undergo a transformation into a modern city with enhanced urban planning. “The city is facing challenges such as rising property prices, traffic congestion, and infrastructure strain. Expanding Bhubaneswar’s boundaries under the Town Planning Scheme (TP Scheme) will help resolve these issues,” Mahapatra said.

As part of the city’s expansion, administrative and municipal units will also be upgraded to meet the demands of the growing population. The proposed development includes constructing a ring road and widening existing roads to improve infrastructure and connectivity.

The Mohan Majhi-led government is also pursuing the ambitious goal of creating a tri-city comprising Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri. “The tri-city proposal is under discussion, and detailed plans will be revealed soon,” the Minister added.

This initiative aligns with the state government’s broader urban development agenda. Recently, Odisha announced major projects, including the transformation of Puri into an international city and the Mahanadi riverfront beautification project in Cuttack. These developments aim to enhance the state’s urban landscape and boost its global appeal.

The Minister further noted that similar urban development plans are being discussed for other cities in Odisha.
