Jajpur: In a tragic incident, a class IV student died inside the classroom while doing sit-ups at Suryanarayan Nodal UP School at Orali under Kuakhia police limits in Jajpur district on Wednesday.

The 10-year-old Rudra Narayan Sethi was found to be ailing and was feeling unwell in the class, official said after a preliminary investigation.

According to reports, Rudra and some other students were asked to do sit-ups in the classroom for giving wrong answers.

Only after two-three sit-ups, the boy fainted. “We immediately informed his parents who rushed to the spot and took him to Madhuban CHC where doctors referred him to Cuttack. Later, doctors declared him brought dead,” headmistress Pramila Panda said.

The grandfather of the deceased boy, Gangadhar Sethi said Rudra was declared dead at Madhuban health center. “Still, we took him to Dharmashala CHC where doctors advised us to take Cuttack. However, doctors said that he was no more,” Sethi said.

On being informed Rasulpur Assistant Block Education Officer (ABEO) Dr Prabhanjan Pati reached the school and launched an inquiry.

“From the statement of students, teachers and villagers, it was known that the student was unwell. He was suffering from asthma. On the fateful day, he also complained of chest pain. He was not interested in going to school. But, his mother insisted him on attending class. He was also sitting silently in the classroom,” Pati said.

Teachers asked him and other students to do sit ups for not bringing science notebook. “After two sit-ups, he collapsed. He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said.

“We are waiting for the medical reports. We will also take the statement of his parents before taking any action,” Pati said.
