Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday announced plans to recruit women as firefighters in Odisha by renaming the post from “Fireman” to “Fire Fighter” or Agni Yodha through necessary amendments.

Speaking at the state-level firefighter recruitment ceremony in Bhubaneswar, he emphasized that this move would create equal opportunities for women to serve the public in emergency services.

Addressing newly appointed firefighters, the Chief Minister congratulated them on their responsibilities and highlighted the significance of their role. “Saving a human life is a great virtue. Society’s appreciation and respect will be your greatest achievement,” Majhi said, underscoring the reputation and respect firefighters earn through their dedication.

The Chief Minister announced the addition of 941 new personnel to the fire services department, filling 826 fireman vacancies and 115 fireman driver posts. He also revealed plans to fill 10,000 posts in the Home Department and 1.5 lakh government positions over the next five years, contributing to Odisha’s employment and industrial growth through initiatives like Make in Odisha-Utkarsh Odisha.

Majhi praised Odisha Fire Services for their exemplary work during disasters, particularly citing their bravery during the Bahanaga rail accident. With 346 fire stations across the state, he noted that the department serves as a first responder under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and has received ₹394 crore from the Disaster Mitigation Fund and ₹201 crore from the 15th Finance Commission to enhance its capabilities.

Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo highlighted the need for courage, compassion, and commitment in firefighters while suggesting amendments to urban safety regulations for high-rise buildings.

Deputy CM Pravati Parida proposed extending opportunities to women in firefighting services, reflecting the growing respect for the role of firefighters in Odisha.

Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja lauded the efficiency of Odisha’s fire services in disaster response, with Ahuja noting their international acclaim for skills demonstrated during Cyclone Dana.

Satyabrat Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, delivered the welcome address and Sudhanshu Sarangi, Director General of Fire Services delivered the vote of thanks.

The event concluded with the distribution of appointment letters to new recruits and encouragement from dignitaries to continue earning recognition for their service.
