Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a significant decision to provide financial assistance to Panchayat representatives in the event of death or disability during their tenure. The move aims to support grassroots leaders who play a vital role in rural development and are directly connected with the people.
The scheme will cover all Panchayat representatives, from ward members to Zilla Parishad Presidents. In case of death during tenure, an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin. Additionally, compensation will be provided for disabilities, with Rs 2 lakh for loss of both eyes, hands, or legs, and Rs 1 lakh for loss of one eye, hand, or leg.
The Chief Minister’s decision recognises the challenges and risks faced by Panchayat representatives in the course of their duties. By providing financial support, the government aims to bolster morale and offer a safety net to thousands of local self-government functionaries who act as the first line of governance in rural Odisha.
