Bhubaneswar: Marking the International Day for Biological Diversity, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today underscored the state’s ecological wealth, calling for renewed efforts to preserve its rich biodiversity.
In a message shared on social media X, CM Majhi wrote, “From the whispering mangroves of Bhitarkanika to the tranquil waters of Chilika, #Odisha breathes biodiversity. On this International Day for Biological Diversity, let’s honour nature’s harmony and vow to protect its every note. #BiodiversityDay.”
Odisha is home to some of India’s most vital ecological hotspots. Bhitarkanika National Park, located in Kendrapara district, is recognized as the second-largest mangrove ecosystem in the country.

Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, spans the districts of Puri, Khordha, and Ganjam, and plays a critical role in supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna.
Chilika is a key wintering ground for over a million migratory birds and sustains more than 200 species of fish. It is also one of the few remaining habitats globally for the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, making it a focal point for conservation initiatives and ecotourism.
CM Majhi’s statement reflects growing awareness of the importance of biodiversity, not just for environmental sustainability but also for the well-being of future generations.
As Odisha continues to balance development with conservation, the Chief Minister’s message resonates as a call to action to protect the natural heritage of the state.
