Bhubaneswar: Odisha will hold students’ union elections starting next year, as announced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during a state-level program of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Cuttack on Thursday.
In his media address, CM Majhi confirmed that the elections for students’ unions will definitely take place in colleges and universities next year.
He expressed his confusion over the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government’s decision to suspend the elections.
“I am still wondering why the previous government stopped students’ union elections. Students’ organizations are important for the state’s progress. We will adopt a similar framework for conducting elections as was previously employed. Elections will certainly take place in colleges and universities throughout the state in the upcoming year,” said CM Majhi.
It is important to note that campus elections have not been held since 2018. The elections were canceled that year due to Cyclone Titli. Additionally, the closure of campuses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, along with campus unrest, were other factors contributing to the postponement of elections in subsequent years.
