Baripada: Odisha government on Wednesday deposited Rs 5,000 each in the bank accounts of around 35 lakh women as the second phase of the first installment money disbursement of its ambitious women’s empowerment scheme.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi released the amount of Rs 5,000 to the beneficiaries at an event held at the Chhau Ground in Baripada in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and other dignitaries.
BJP had promised in its Sankalp Patra (election manifesto) that it would introduce the Subhadra Yojana for women. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Subhadra scheme in Bhubaneswar on his birthday on September 17 this year. Around 2500000 women received Rs 5,000 in their bank accounts on that day.
Under the scheme, each beneficiary will receive Rs 10,000 per year in two installments of Rs 5,000 each – one on Rakhi Purnima and the second on International Women’s Day (March 8) for five years.
Women, who were excluded from the first phase of the disbursement due to various reasons and submitted applications by October 7, received the amount in the second phase.
