Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has paid heartfelt tribute to renowned freedom fighter Parbati Giri on her birth centenary, highlighting her contributions to India’s freedom struggle and social service.

Inspired by the Gandhian movement, she joined the freedom struggle at the remarkably young age of 11. Unlike most children her age, Parbati spent her formative years travelling across villages, spreading awareness about the importance of Swadeshi and non-cooperation.

Parbati, known as the “Mother Teresa of Western Odisha, was just 16 when she was in the forefront of agitation following Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘Quit India’ call. Due to her anti-British government activities, she was imprisoned for two years. Later dedicated her life to social work, establishing orphanages and working for tribal welfare.

Taking to his X handle, Majhi wrote: “ On the occasion of the birth centenary of Odisha’s daughter, the unique symbol of service and sacrifice, and the distinguished freedom fighter Parbati Giri, heartfelt and devoted salutations.  From the freedom movement to social service, and in the field of women’s empowerment, her contribution remains forever unforgettable. Her dedication to public service and her ideals will eternally remain a source of inspiration for us.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded Parbati Giri’s efforts. Taking to the social media platform ‘X’, the Prime Minister said, “Paying homage to Parbati Giri Ji on her birth centenary. She played a commendable role in the movement to end colonial rule. Her passion for community service and work in sectors like healthcare, women’s empowerment and culture is noteworthy. Here is what I had said in last month’s #MannKiBaat.”

Earlier, on December 28, Prime Minister Modi had also referred to Parbati Giri Ji during his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’.
