Bhubaneswar: Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy on Wednesday met Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at the Lok Seva Bhawan and discussed key issues related to the long-pending expansion of the Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) integrated steel plant in Rourkela, Sundargarh district.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Union Minister said the discussions were “lengthy and fruitful,” particularly on matters that had remained unresolved for several years. “Some issues have been pending for a long time. Today, the Chief Minister, along with state officials, held an extensive discussion with our ministry. He has assured swift action, especially on land-related concerns,” Kumaraswamy said.
He added that a committee has already been formed following earlier deliberations in Delhi to address and resolve all outstanding issues related to SAIL’s proposed expansion to 9.5 MTPA. “The Chief Minister has shown strong leadership. After our Delhi meeting, a committee was constituted, and most issues are now progressing well. I appreciate the CM’s proactive approach,” he said.
Kumaraswamy emphasised that Odisha will play a pivotal role in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national target for enhanced steel production. “Our Rourkela plant is being expanded to 9.5 million tonnes. Private steel players are also contributing significantly. The Centre remains committed to supporting both public and private steel units to strengthen India’s steel ecosystem,” he noted.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the meeting included detailed discussions on ensuring smooth land acquisition for the Rourkela Steel Plant expansion. Chief Minister Majhi highlighted that the expansion is crucial for accelerating Odisha’s economic growth and generating employment opportunities.
The state government has also decided to form a committee headed by an Additional Chief Secretary–rank officer to address all pending issues in consultation with local stakeholders. Discussions were additionally held on land-related matters concerning the proposed airport in Rourkela.
