Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Home Department has alerted all collectors, SPs, and DCPs in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to take preventive measures ahead of a 12-hour Odisha Bandh called by opposition parties, including Congress and Left parties, on Thursday.
The bandh is in protest against the death of a girl student who allegedly attempted self-immolation due to sexual harassment.
The agitators plan to block roads, close establishments, and disrupt public transport. The district administrations have been asked to ensure law and order and maintain essential services.
Notably, eight opposition parties, led by the Congress, called an Odisha bandh on July 17 to protest the death of the college student who set herself on fire following inaction over her sexual harassment complaint against a professor.
The Opposition claimed the incident, which happened at the Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, showed that the state government has failed to protect women.
