Bhubaneswar: The principal of Haldia Degree College in Khurda was severely assaulted by a mob including a college lecturer and chairperson of the college managing committee today.
The police have started an investigation after a complaint was lodged at the Khurda Industrial police station.
According to the police complaint, principal Umakant Patra was sitting in his chamber wearing a towel at around 8:30 on Wednesday morning. The college management committee chairman Ranjan Kumar Bhanja, History Department Lecturer Vijay Kumar Bhanj Deo along with some locals Rabi Narayan Bhanja Samanta, Pradipta Kumar Bhanja, Bhabani Prasad Patnaik and Srikant Kumar Bhanja entered the chamber and showed some papers.
The managing committee chairman asked the Principal to leave the principal’s seat and the college campus. But Umakant did not agree with them.
They thrashed and slapped Umakant. Bhanja Deo, the history lecturer, dragged him and pushed him out of the room. In the attack, Umakant suffered injuries on his neck, he mentioned in his complaint.
The incident happened in the presence of peon and watchman of the college.
The assailants fled after the incident. The entire scene was also captured on CCTV cameras. After being informed, some local people rescued Umakant and admitted him to the hospital.
After preliminary treatment, the principal went to the Industrial police station and lodged a written complaint.
The police have now started investigating the incident and checking the CCTV footage.
