Bhubaneswar: The Jajpur District Judge Court here today sentenced a college teacher to seven years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for impregnating a student by promising to marry her. He then ditched her.
The convict identified as one Naba Kishore Rana of Shakuntalapur village under Barchana police limits in Jajpur district was ordered by the court to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 in addition to seven years RI.
On failure to pay the fine, the court ordered Rana to undergo imprisonment for another three months.
District Judge Srikant Mishra awarded the sentence on the basis of depositions of 15 witnesses and medical reports. The case was conducted by Special Public Prosecutor Samarendra Das.
According to reports, Rana, who was serving as a teacher in a local women’s college in 2016 was also giving tuitions to a student from Kainchipokhari area under Byree police limits studying in the +2 class of the same college at his home.
Despite being married Rana had entered into physical relationship with the student by promising to marry her which resulted in pregnancy. Following the pregnancy, the student informed her mother. On being asked by the mother of the student regarding the relationship, Rana outright denied it. Unable to bear the shame the student’s mother committed suicide.
On September 10, 2016, a case was registered at Barchana police station in this connection, and Rana was arrested.
