**Cuttack:** With general elections round the corner, a team of Commissionerate Police led by Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty conducted a precautionary raid at Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack on Thursday.
Cuttack DCP Akhileshvar Singh, IICs of five police stations and five platoons of police force were part of the raid which continued for around one and a half hours.
Briefing mediapersons after the raid, Mohanty said, “As per the guidelines of Election Commission of India, after enforcement of Model Code of Conduct, visiting local jails was one of the precautionary measures as some under trial prisoners do have nexus with anti-socials.”
The team checked if such activities are prevalent at Choudwar jail and from 11.30 am to 1 pm visited every ward and other places on the premises of the jail with co-operation of jail staff, he added.
Mohanty further asserted that they have not found any illegal items from the jail and came to know that the Jail Superintendent and Jailer are active in their duties and the jail staff have welcomed the surprise raid, which may continue in future.
On being asked about the viral videos reportedly circulated from the jail and have the team discovered any use of mobile phones by jail inmates, Mohanty said they have not came through any such items during the raid.
Further answering a query regarding the death of Subhransu Dash in the jail, the Commissioner said today’s raid has nothing to do with it. He informed that the case is currently under probe, which is led by an ACP of Commissionerate Police.
He also added that a discussion over the issue was held with the Jail Superintendent and other authorities today. The jail doctor who was absent has returned today and his statement will also be recorded. Further action will be taken as per the probe.
