Bhubaneswar: A day after four inmates of Jharpada Jail were injured during a clash between two groups late on Monday night, Commissionerate Police on Wednesday raided the jail for investigation.
According to sources, a police team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Prateek Singh reached the jail early Wednesday morning. The special team comprising six Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and five Inspectors In-Charge (IICs) visited each cell of the jail to take stock of the situation. Besides, a platoon of police force has been deployed to keep a vigil on the activities of inmates.
The cops seized ganja, gutkha, khaini, bidi, tobacco products, matchboxes, and lighters inside the jail.
Trouble brewed inside the jail after a fight ensued between members of the Chakara gang and Sambhu gang over smoking brown sugar inside the prison premises. The situation worsened to such an extent that the jail superintendent reported the matter to the local police station.
An inmate, identified as Papu has lost one of his eyes in the alleged assault by the Chakara gang. The injured were initially treated at the jail hospital and later shifted to Capital Hospital. The Jharpada jail authorities had filed a complaint with Laxmisagar police.
Also, the Prison Department has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
