Congress Condemns BJP MLA’s “Offensive Statement” In Odisha Assembly, Demands Apology

Bhubaneswar: As senior BJP MLA and Deputy Leader of Opposition Bishnu Charan Sethy’s allegedly offensive statement against the women of a particular community has already stirred hornet’s nest in the Assembly today with vehement protest from both ruling BJD and Congress members, Odisha unit of Congress party also demanded his apology and threatened to stage dharna till the session is underway.

Convening a press meet, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Niranjan Patnaik said, “The way Deputy Leader of Opposition Bishnu Babu of BJP has given his statement in the Assembly, the language and word he has used is absolutely unfortunate. We strongly condemn it.”

He argued, “Our Indian culture is to honour the women. His (BJP MLA Bishnu Sethy) mean attitude towards the women is uncalled for and indecent. Regretfully I would like to say that he is a senior leader of a political party and is also the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Assembly. But, he is going against the Indian culture.”

“Hence, we demand that he should beg apology. In the past also it has been noticed that the leaders of that party (BJP) have used offensive statement against the women. When the women of other communities get divorced, will it be decent to use the word prostitution? He might have used in whatever context, but it is against our cultural ethos and etiquette. If he doesn’t beg apology, we’ll stage dharna till the Assembly session is on,” the PCC president threatened.

In his reactions on the Assembly premises, Congress MLA Mohammed Moquim said, “Our demand today in the House was to expunge the objectionable word. Both BJD and Congress members protested against such comments on a community.”

“Odisha is a peace-loving State. We wish that all should co-exist here in a harmonious milieu. Better not to discuss further on it,” he opined.
