**Bhubaneswar:** Demanding unconditional release of Nabarangpur’s former MP Pradip Majhi from jail, the Student and Youth Congress wings on Monday held protests here.
While Student Congress activists led by its president Itish Pradhan took out a bike rally from Congress Bhawan and headed towards Naveen Niwas, they were arrested by the police at Sishu Bhawan Chhak when they broke the police cordon.
The Youth activists of the party led by its president Rajat Choudhury and senior Congress leader Suresh Routray also took out a bike rally from the Congress Bhawan to the Raj Bhawan and were back to the Master Canteen Chowk where they staged a road blockade for about half-an-hour burning tyres and also burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
On the other hand, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Prasad Harichandan on Monday went to Nabarangpur to meet arrested former party MP Pradip Majhi in the jail there.
Need to be mentioned that Majhi and some Congress activists were arrested on Saturday for allegedly ransacking the Raighar range office and also for allegedly assaulting Ranger Kumar Khara and Raighar ASI Bulu Patnaik alleging that the officials failed to fulfil the legitimate demands of the tribals.
Notably, the Nabarangpur Congress district unit has also called a dawn-to-dusk Nabarangpur bandh on Tuesday protesting the arrests of Majhi and other Congress activists.
Party Dabugaon MLA Bhujabala Majhi reportedly demanded immediate release of the former MP and other party activists at the earliest threatening the party would otherwise paralyse normal life.
Meanwhile, arrested Pradip Majhi along with seven other arrested party activists has reportedly started a hunger strike in the jail protesting their ‘illegal and arbitrary’ arrests.
