Bhubaneswar: In the wake of the recent suicide of a female student in Odisha, the Congress party has announced a series of measures aimed at addressing the growing concerns over women’s safety and well-being in the state.
Speaking at a press conference, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Bhakta Das unveiled plans to establish a Women’s Complaint Cell at Congress Bhawan and to launch a Women’s Safety App designed to provide a direct platform for women to report grievances and seek assistance.
The initiative, Congress leaders say, is a response to the rising number of distressing cases involving women, particularly young students. “Women in distress can use this app to file complaints, and the Congress party will take it upon itself to resolve their problems,” Das assured.
As a mark of collective mourning and solidarity, the Congress will observe ‘Shraddhanjali Divas’ (Tribute Day) on July 24 across Odisha, in memory of female students who have died by suicide or been victims of violence. The party has appealed to educational institutions to observe two minutes of silence on that day. The event will also be supported by eight Left-leaning parties, signaling a broader coalition concerned with student safety and women’s rights.
Das added that the initiative was not a symbolic gesture but part of a broader political and social campaign.
Further steps and long-term action plans will be charted out after a joint meeting of participating parties following the July 24 observance.
