Bhubaneswar: The price of onions has skyrocketed in the city, leaving consumers in a difficult situation. While potatoes are being sold at Rs 40 per kilogram, onion prices have risen to Rs 50 per kilogram.
According to sources, while potatoes are being sold at Rs 40 per kilogram with no signs of a price drop shortly, onion prices have surged significantly. Just a few days ago, onion was selling at around Rs 35 per kilogram, but its price has increased by Rs 10-15 per kilogram within just two days. Now, onion is being sold at Rs 50 per kilogram in the market.
Traders attribute the price rise to a shortage in supply, particularly of onion, which is imported from other states. “The price of onion has increased due to a shortage in supply from Nasik. If the supply doesn’t improve, prices may rise further,” said a trader.
He further said, “The situation is likely to worsen if the supply of onion doesn’t improve soon. Consumers should brace themselves for further price rises, which could add to their financial woes.”
The price rise has affected the common man, who is already reeling under the pressure of high prices of other essential commodities. “It’s becoming difficult for us to manage our household expenses with the rising prices of onions and potatoes,” said a homemaker.
