**Bhubaneswar**: The consumer forum has claimed that the proposed power tariff hike is arbitrary and must not be accepted by the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC).
Addressing a press conference here, Ramesh Satpathy, Secretary of National Institute of India Labour said, “Gridco has planned to increase the power tariff from Rs 4.80 per unit to Rs 6.80 average per unit of power consumption. It has submitted a proposal to the OERC regarding this. It is purchasing electricity at higher costs and trying to transfer the burden to the consumers. In some cases it has purchased power at the cost as high as Rs 41 per unit. Why should a common man bear this burden?”
Notably, the Gridco has recently applied for an increase in the existing power tariff before OERC. Clarifying the move, Gridco’s Finance department director Bibhu Prasad Mohapatra informed that the company had to make this recommendation as hydropower generation has gone down gradually and they are depending on thermal power. The thermal power sourced from the NTPC is of high cost. So tariff hike is inevitable.
