Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Sunday launched a pilot project wherein the cops at the reception desk in police stations will wear body cameras.
Police personnel at the reception desk will wear body cameras to monitor the activities of the visitors, especially troublemakers, inside a police station. The body cameras will record the audio and video of both – the police personnel and the visitors.
The Commissionerate Police came up with a new measure to tackle unruly behaviours taking place at various police stations. Pilot projects have been started in various police stations under the Commissionerate Police. In the past, drunken young women and young men went to the police station and abused the police in vulgar language.
Additional Police Commissioner Uma Shankar Mishra paid a visit to the Kharvela police station in Bhubaneswar and inspected the functioning of the new devices.
In September this year, an Army officer and his friend were assaulted by policemen at Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar and five police officers, including an Inspector rank officer, were suspended pending a disciplinary procedure for gross misconduct.
It is worth mentioning that the Commissionerate Police introduced body cams in 2017 when traffic police were given to wear body cameras to register traffic movements at various vital junctions in Bhubaneswar.
