**Bhawanipatna**: Mystery shrouds the death of a 22-year-old newly married woman at Shaktinagar Pada in Bhawanipatna under the Town police limits. The deceased has been identified as Priyadarshini Mohapatra, wife of Ajay Mohapatra, a police constable in District Volunteer Force ( a special constabulary unit of the Odisha Police, primarily used in anti-Maoists operations).
The parents of the deceased, hailing from Patbanda village under Balikuda police limits in Khurda, have alleged this as a dowry killing and have lodged a complaint against her husband and in-laws in Town Thana of Bhawanipatna.
While the in-laws of the deceased claimed that she had committed suicide over a trifle family quarrel , her family members alleged that she was burnt to death after the demand for dowry was not met.
The police have registered a case under Section 302/498 A/ 304 B of the IPC34 against the in-laws. Meanwhile, Ajay Mohapatra has been detained for interrogation.
Priyadarshini got married in May 2014 and is survived by an one and half year old daughter. She is presently with her maternal grandparents.
The parents of the deceased alleged that her in-laws had demanded a bike and Rs.60,000 for dowry. They also alleged that Priyadarshini was harassed by her in-laws.
“Investigation is going on. The parents-in-law of the deceased will be nterrogated once the funeral rites are over. We cannot reach to a conclusion without proper investigation,”said S.N Satpathy, IIC, Town Thana, Bhawanipatna.
