Jharigaon (Nabarangpur): In a tragic and puzzling incident, a married couple was found dead by hanging in San Bhimada village under Umerkote police station limits of Jharigaon block in Nabarangpur district on Tuesday morning. The incident has shocked the local community and left many questions unanswered.
The deceased have been identified as Sutam Bhatra (32) and Phulmani Bhatra (27), a couple married for the past 10 years through traditional customs. According to villagers, the couple had a seemingly peaceful marital life with no known disputes or tensions.
Locals reported that the couple had dinner together the previous night and went to bed as usual. However, early this morning, villagers discovered Phulmani hanging inside the house with a scarf tied around her neck, while Sutam was found hanging from a tamarind tree in the courtyard using what appeared to be his wife’s saree.
Upon being informed, the police reached the spot, seized the bodies, and sent them for autopsy to Umerkote Community Health Centre. A formal complaint was lodged by a relative, Mangulu Bhatra, at the Umerkote police station.
While investigations are underway, the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unknown. Police are waiting for post-mortem results and continuing their probe to determine whether it was a case of suicide, domestic violence, or involved any external factors.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief and confusion over San Bhimada village, as residents mourn the sudden loss of a couple considered harmonious and well-liked in the community.
