Bhubaneswar: Covid-19 cases continued to increase in Odisha on Wednesday as the state witnessed a significant jump in the number of daily infections compared to the day before. According to Government of India Health Department statistics, Odisha recorded 212 new infections during the past 24 hours compared to added 141 fresh infections in the previous 24 hours.

The tally of Covid-19 active cases in Odisha now stands at 902, while the test positivity rate is 3 per cent. On Tuesday, Odisha Public Health Director Niranjan Mishra claimed that the positivity rate in the country was 6.9 per cent whereas it is 2.8 per cent in Odisha.

According to Mishra, most of the new infections are being reported from 16 districts in the state. The highest of 64 cases have been reported from Sundargarh, followed by 42 from Nabarangpur. Khurda and Cuttack recorded 18 and 23 cases respectively.

While symptoms in most cases have been mild so far, the state Health Department has advised people with comorbidity to immediately undergo testing and treatment in the event of any symptoms. Currently, only 12 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals.

Amid the spike in Covid-19 cases in the state, Odisha has sought 50,000 Corbevax doses from the Centre to start the vaccination drive.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also held a review meeting soon after returning from Japan on Tuesday and issued a release, stating that the situation was under control.

Meanwhile, Odisha has been reporting over 100 Covid-19 cases every day for the past week.
