Puri: The district administration here today appealed Habishyalis (widows and elderly Odia women who observe holy Kartik Brata for attaining salvation) to avoid visiting the pilgrim town because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Since the pandemic situation is prevailing Habishyalis being elderly women are the most vulnerable group, risks are high. So, in my opinion, Habishyalis should avoid coming to Puri and observe Kartik Brata in their homes,” stated Puri Sub Collector Bhavataran Sahu.
In Puri every day reported cases of Covid-19 is rising, Sahu added.
The Sub Collector informed that this year because of the ongoing pandemic situation no special arrangements like camps etc for the stay of Habishyalis has been made by the district administration.
Since the Hindu month of Kartik is considered holy and is said to be the favourite month of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, Odia widows and elderly women throng to Puri in thousands to offer special puja to Radha Damodar, another embodiment of Radha and Lord Krishna to observe Kartik Brata and practice certain rituals with austerity throughout the month.
