COVID-19: Violation Of Social Distancing Norms At Markets In Bhubaneswar, A Major Concern

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary today expressed concern over the violation of social distancing norms at public places particularly markets.

“Violation of social distancing norms in market areas is a major concern. Your cooperation is highly solicited in this,” stated Chaudhary addressing a presser on challenges in containing the spread of COVID-19 in Bhubaneswar at the Geeta Govinda Sadan here today.

The BMC Commissioner pointed out that BMC has been always making appeals in this connection and taking enforcement measures including complete shutdown of a market area.
Chaudhary lamented that the BMC is not getting the kind of support and cooperation it should get in this regard.

“My appeal on behalf of the BMC as well as on behalf of the government would be that to successfully fight this challenge we need your help. First we had gone for government monitoring, then community monitoring and now it is time to go for self-monitoring,” the BMC Commissioner said. “Now we have to focus on self-monitoring.”

Chaudhary said it is now on ourselves whether we have properly put on masks, this place is crowded should I go to this place or not?

If the place is very crowded we should avoid it.

The BMC Commissioner lamented that despite Bhubaneswar residents being conversant with online shopping etc. the crowding in markets is observed on Friday, the day before the weekend shutdown.
