Puri: In the midst of lockdown triggered by the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic, the members of State-based NGO ‘Sujog’ distributed essential items to transgenders in the pilgrim town today.
Around 50 transgenders living in Puri municipality and in areas close to the town received Chuda, rice, sugar, vegetables, and other grocery items from Sujog. The NGO also distributed safety items like masks, sanitisers and soaps and educated the beneficiaries on importance of social distancing.
Members of civil society of Puri and Sujog Bhubaneswar organised the relief distribution programme. District Social Security Officer Trinath Padhi exhorted the social organisations to come forward for the rehabilitation of transgenders.
Former CMD of Nalco, Tapan Chand, who is the president of Sujog addressed the beneficiaries over video conference on the occasion. He assured the that the organisation will extend further assistance for the rehabilitation of transgenders in the future.
On the occasion, identity cards were distributed to 28 transgenders by the SSEPD department. Sujog is an open platform of opportunities to take up social welfare and economic development issues by professionals, entrepreneurs, business managers, innovators, social activists, change catalysts and like-minded persons, the organisers said.
