Cuttack: The Odisha Drugs Control Department on Tuesday launched a major crackdown on the illegal sale of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kits—commonly referred to as abortion kits—in Cuttack district.
Acting on a tip-off, officials raided multiple chemist stores suspected of selling MTP kits without a valid prescription.
According to Cuttack Drugs Inspector Tushar Ranjan Panigrahi, several pharmacies were found violating regulations that mandate MTP kits be sold only under the supervision and prescription of a qualified gynecologist.
“Many chemists are selling abortion kits over the counter, which is completely illegal. As per MTP regulations, these kits must be dispensed only under a gynecologist’s supervision. We are verifying stock records to assess how much is being purchased, sold, and to whom,” Panigrahi said.
He further stated that if discrepancies are found in stock and sales data, strict action will be taken under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Stores found stocking or selling the kits unlawfully could face license suspension or other penalties.
“We have launched inspections in areas such as Ranihat Chhak and College Square. Suspected stores will have their stocks seized and tested. If proper documentation is not provided, they will be issued show-cause notices,” he added.
Panigrahi also issued a public advisory against the unsupervised use of MTP kits.
“Using these kits without medical consultation can lead to severe health risks, including excessive bleeding or even death. No one should purchase or consume them without a gynecologist’s prescription,” he warned.
