Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also holds the Home portfolio, on Monday, told the Assembly that the state witnessed a marginal rise in crime rates in 2024 compared to 2023.
Replying to a question raised by Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, the Chief Minister said that 2,14,113 cases of cognizable offence were registered in 2024, up from 1,99,954 cases in the previous year. Majhi said that the rise in crime was primarily due to a rise in registration of cases, population growth, increased reporting of cases, and rapid economic development.
Presenting a break-up of the cases in 2024, the Chief Minister said that while theft cases increased from 16,851 in 2023 to 17,805 in 2024, accident-related cases rose from 11,992 in 2023 to 12,375 in 2024. Similarly, rape cases increased from 2,826 in 2023 to 3,054 in 2024.
