Bhubaneswar: The crocodile population in Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary has seen a significant increase, with a total of 111 crocodiles recorded this year, up from 75 last year. This includes 97 mugger crocodiles and 14 gharial crocodiles.
The sanctuary, spanning 22 kilometers along the Mahanadi River, provides a favorable environment for these reptiles. The increase is attributed to conservation efforts and the recent spotting of hatchlings, indicating successful breeding in the area.
The Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary is a significant habitat for crocodiles, with Odisha being the only state in India to host all three species: gharial, saltwater crocodile, and mugger. The sanctuary’s conservation efforts, including incubation and rearing centres, have contributed to the growth of the crocodile population.
