Bhubaneswar: In a significant bust, officials from the Customs and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 3.2 kg of marijuana worth Rs 3 crore at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar. The contraband, originating from Bangkok, was intercepted today.
A man from Kerala, who allegedly smuggled the marijuana, was arrested and is currently being interrogated. This comes after a similar incident in August, where Customs officials seized a consignment of marijuana worth Rs 4 crore from a couple arriving from Bangkok.
The raiding team is working to unravel the smuggling network and identify other smugglers involved in the racket.
In August, marijuana worth Rs 8 crore was seized from the international airport. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized the drugs as they arrived from Thailand on an IndiGo flight. The Customs Department detained a youth from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in connection with the case. In a related incident, marijuana worth Rs 30 crore was seized from the airport just two days earlier. Earlier, on July 30, 30 kg of marijuana was seized, and three youths from Uttar Pradesh were arrested. These recent incidents suggest an international conspiracy to turn Bhubaneswar into a drug hub.
