Cuttack: Jagatpur police, under the Twin City Commissionerate Police, have been successful in apprehending a five-member bike-lifting gang and 35 stolen motor-bikes have also been recovered from their possession.
Besides, one Tata Magic four wheeler has also been seized.
This was informed by Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh during a press briefing today at the Jagatpur Police Station (PS) here.
As per reports, during night patrolling at Jagatpur Square by the police team, a Tata Magic vehicle was intercepted and checked. While one person seated in it was interrogated, another was coming from behind on a Scooty. During interrogation, the police came to know about the theft of two bikes.
Thus, the Jagatpur police intensified its probe. The investigation gradually revealed that the duo stole motor-bikes from various districts and stored it in a godown at Keonjhar for sale. With the help of Keonjhar police, the Jagatpur cops recovered 35 stolen motor-bikes from the godown and brought back to Cuttack. Three more accused were also arrested from Keonjhar.
Their modus operandi was to target bike owners travelling in lonely areas. They also have duplicate keys to steal parked bikes.
They have committed the crime in Bhubaneswar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Jagatsinghpur and so on.
They sell those stolen bikes with a range between Rs 4,000 and Rs 10,000.
The first two arrested accused have been identified as Papu alias Bhaktacharan Rout and Jagan alias Jagabandhu Rout while the mastermind is Papu. A number of theft cases of 2016 are pending against his name at Choudwar and Jagatpur police stations.
The three accused arrested from Keonjhar are Ratikant Pradhan, Prashant Samal and Muna alias Pratap Sethi.
Along with Jagan, the three arrested from Keomjhar have earlier been booked in several dacoity cases. All the arrested pesons are infamous thieves.
Sources said that the cooperation of the RTOs will be sought to ascertain the bona fide owners of the stolen vehicles and would be returned to them.
