Cuttack: The Commissionerate of Police have cracked the sensational IIFL dacoity case with the arrest of mastermind Lala Amrut Sagar Ray and six of his associates on Wednesday. The accused include a 34-year-old woman, Nilima Lenka who works as a gold valuer at Nayasarak branch of India Infoline Finance Ltd (IIFL) in the city.
The police have seized, Rs 5 lakh, 3 kilograms of gold, and Audi car, two motorcycles, a toy gun and other ornaments. Ray, a resident of Markatnagar area, works as gold appraiser at IIFL, Cuttack since 2011. According to the police, he misapropriated mortgaged gold of public and invested some of it in a private firm. He availed personal loan from the same firm and also sold some gold in the market.
“As the misappropriation became huge, and he realised for not being able to adjust it in the company’s audit, Ray hatched the plot with an associate Rajan Kumar Behera,” said DCP Prateek Singh. Ray convinced his childhood friends Nilima Leka and Kabi Prasad Pradhan, to join him. Four others, Rajkishore Sahoo, Pabitra Behera, Prakash Kumar Sahoo and Santosh Bhoi also came along with the mastermind Ray.
On November 19, the Ray, Lenka and the team committed the dacoity by threatening the staff with a toy gun. The seven of them fled from the spot and dispersed after the act. On the basis of a complaint lodged by Territory Manager of IIFL Tapas Ranjan Swain, Lalbag police registered an FIR and started investigation. In course of the probe, police was able to unearth the plot and traced the accused, Singh added.
