**Cuttack: ** The Cuttack Bar Association’s vehement protest against the thrashing of a lawyer by some police personnel on Tuesday night under Chauliaganj Police Station limits took an ugly turn on Wednesday as a Police Control Room (PCR) van was set on blaze near the Revenue Division Commissioner (RDC)’s office near the High Court campus here.
Even though no casualty was reported till the filing of this report and also the agitating lawyers did not claim any responsibility for the torching of the van, the PCR van was seen fully on flames.
A senior advocate of the Cuttack Bar Association defended, “It is the handiwork of any miscreants. We are no way involved in the torching of the PCR van. We have been protesting peacefully against the thrashing of our fellow lawyer last night. We demand stringent action against those police officials.”
On the other hand, the Cuttack Bar Association earlier in the day had called up a meeting and hundreds of lawyer had gheraoed the Chauliaganj Police Station protesting against the thrashing of their fellow lawyer last night and demanded strict actions against the cops involved in the attack.
Meanwhile, an official statement issued by the Commissionerate Police stated, “3 cases have been registered in connection with the incident including the one on the report of the advocate. An Addl DCP is ordered to conduct enquiry, supervise the cases and submit his report at the earliest. One person named in the FIR for assaulting the advocate has been detained by police. Action against erring PCR van personnel will be taken on the basis of the enquiry report. Police appeals for calm to the striking advocates.”
On the contrary, a video doing round on social media also vividly shows that the lawyer in question was in an inebriated state and was creating public nuisance on the road. He is even seen creating nuisance and hurling abuses in the police station too in the very presence of his female family members.
Notably, tension prevailed in Chauliaganj area here last night after a lawyer was attacked by some police officials following a verbal spat near Nua Bazaar Bridge earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, the injured lawyer has been admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital and is undergoing treatment.
