Cuttack: Two persons, including a tuition teacher, were arrested in Odisha’s Cuttack city on Sunday on charges of extorting money in the name of the gangster siblings Sushant and Sushil Dhal Samanta who are currently lodged in prison.
The two arrested have been identified as Mantu alias Kamalakant Barik and Babu alias Dilip Kumar Das, a tuition teacher. While one hails from Jagatsinghpur, the other is a native of Dhenkanal.
According to reports, Chauliaganj police in Cuttack seized cash to the tune of Rs 91,000, two motorcycles, including one that was stolen, and five mobile phones from the two accused. The accused have been extorting money for quite some time and businessmen in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Dhenkanal were their primary targets, Cuttack Additional DCP Anil Mishra told reporters at a press conference today.
Mishra added that a complaint was registered against unknown persons on October 23. The accused allegedly demanded protection money to the tune of Rs 5 lakh from a businessman at Chatra Bazaar. They have been arrested and were forwarded to court today.
Earlier, the two had extorted Rs 1 lakh from a person in Dhenkanal in a similar fashion, DCP Mishra said.
A preliminary investigation into the matter revealed that the accused were not linked to the D-Brothers in any way but used the latter’s name to threaten their targets.
