Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, a woman was burnt to death after her house in Haridapal village of Karanji panchayat under Tangi block and Choudwar police limits of Cuttack district on Tuesday.
The deceased woman has been identified as 25-year-old Pushpalata Mahanta, the wife of Ranjeet Mahanta.
According to reports, at least 12 houses in the villager caught fire in the village and were reduced to ashes destroying properties worth lakhs of rupees.
The fire broke out in the thatched house of Ranjan Mahanta and Pushpalata who was inside got trapped in the blaze. She could not come out of her house despite efforts by the villagers and was charred to death.
Gradually, the fire spread to nearby areas and engulfed 12 other houses.
On being informed, personnel from the local police and Fire Services staff reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Choudwar police have registered a case in this connection and started an investigation into the incident. The reason behind the inferno is yet to be ascertained.
